i have been paying very careful attention to the construction of t he bottles, trying to determine what may be potential points of failure. I have begun experimenting with building the bottles in separate parts which will be joined with epoxy after they are fired to temperature. This should allow for greater heights to be achieved.
: the study of the development of human consciousness and self-awareness as a preface to or a part of philosophy.Monica creates functional pieces and larger wall installations using the wheel as her primary tool. Her work explores the space between function and sculpture, this can be seen in her recent exhibit at the Northern Clay Center, "Incontext." Pieces of thrown elements that only allude to plates are shown with functional cups and vases.
Like two of the pervious artists I have posted, Valeria Nascimento creates large pieces made up of small repeated forms. Her inspiration comes from urban landscapes and the natural world. She makes large scale wall installations and has received commissions for stores and private residences. I am drawn to the process of combining small elements to make one large one.
Her works are created based on fractal geometry, relationships of order and chaos. The compositions are made up of repeating elements, coming together to make a whole. In her artist statements, she relates fractal geometry to the oriental philosophy of Samara; it is the circle of life. "The universe is a macrocosm that I am a part of on a microcosmic level. It is like the relationship between the cosmos and human, the human and cell."
I had a hard time finding Mary online, she does not have much of an online presence. I was able to find a statement written by her for Gravers Lane Gallery, in which she talks about the qualities of porcelain . The pieces she throws are paper thin and have a lot of movement. She compared the process of working with the porcelain to drawing. I am drawn to the fluidity of her forms and the delicate thinness.
I find the work of Fennella Elms to be absolutely stunning. I am most drawn to the series "Edges." The pieces are fluid and fragile. With simple and repetitive pattern, the artist creates complicated and intricate moments. The pieces make me think of biologial cross sections, microscopic views of cells, and topography all at once.
I also find the language she used in her artist statement interesting. She talks about handling clay to be "Inquisitive discoveries" and that the firing process preserves "Intimate details in fragile permanence." http://www.fenellaelms.com/ |
