I have been deeply craving structure and community in regards to my studio practice recently. I feel like I'm talking into a void and floundering. These feelings, coupled with health and humanitarian crises in the US, make it is easy to feel like there's no point in making. I'll just stare it my potters wheel and selfishly indulge in the feeling that my art is a useless and profitless endeavor.
I know a lot of my peers are feeling similarly right now.
So much justification comes from social media success; a large instagram following has come to mean a successful art practice. With most of our social interaction happening in the virtual world these days, it seems near impossible to get away from searching for gratification on social media.
While we are still restricted to virtual gatherings, I have decided to create a space celebrating vulnerability and play.
I wanted a space where artists (right now friends of mine) can some together and share the challenges, hope, fears, and insecurities that we are currently experiencing in our studio practices. Where the community exists to hold space.
There is so much fear and uncertainty in the world right now, it is impossible for it to be mutual exclusive from a studio practice.
we all need a little therapy right now.
SO! the point that I am trying to make! I that I created this space.
and it is called: The Reading Room
right now it exists as a website with members and a forum, and video conferences.
